Numbers can open spreadsheets saved on iPad, in iCloud, on connected servers, and in other storage providers such as Dropbox. You can also use Numbers to open and edit Microsoft Excel spreadsheets (.xlsx and .xls).
In the spreadsheet manager, do one of the following:
Open a local version of a spreadsheet: Tap the spreadsheet thumbnail.
Tip: You can search the spreadsheet manager by spreadsheet name or view spreadsheets by date or name. To see these controls, swipe down on the spreadsheet manager screen.
Open a spreadsheet stored in the Numbers folder in iCloud Drive: Tap the spreadsheet thumbnail.
All files and folders inside the Numbers folder in iCloud Drive appear in the spreadsheet manager on your iOS devices.
Open a spreadsheet stored elsewhere in iCloud Drive: Tap
in the top-left corner of the screen, tap iCloud Drive, tap the folder that contains the spreadsheet, then tap the spreadsheet to download it.
The thumbnail appears in the spreadsheet manager and a progress bar appears on the thumbnail during the download. When the download is finished, tap the thumbnail.
Note: If you don’t see your spreadsheets stored in iCloud, you may need to set up iCloud on your device, or turn on iCloud Drive for Numbers, in Settings > iCloud. If you haven’t upgraded your iCloud account to use iCloud Drive, you can open and edit spreadsheets stored in iCloud, but syncing won’t work in all cases. See this Apple Support article for more information.
Open a spreadsheet sent with AirDrop: Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to open Control Center, then tap AirDrop. Tap a discovery option, and when the AirDrop message appears, tap Add.
Open a spreadsheet from another file provider: Tap the small
in the top-left corner of the screen, tap More, then choose from the available sources. The provider name is added to the list. Tap the provider name, then tap the spreadsheet.
Spreadsheets opened this way aren’t added to the thumbnails in the spreadsheet manager. You must open spreadsheets from other file providers through the
menu each time.
Open a spreadsheet from a WebDAV server or iTunes: Tap the small
in the top-left corner of the screen, tap WebDAV or iTunes, provide the required information, then tap the spreadsheet. iTunes appears only if you’ve already added a spreadsheet to iTunes.
The spreadsheet thumbnail appears in the spreadsheet manager and the spreadsheet opens as a local copy. If you edit the spreadsheet, the changes aren’t synced with other devices unless you move the spreadsheet to iCloud.
You can open Numbers spreadsheets in other apps installed on your device. For example, you can open a spreadsheet as an ePub in iBooks.
In the spreadsheet manager, tap
, then tap Open in Another App.
Tap the spreadsheet.
Tap a format (you see only formats supported by the apps installed on your device).
Tap an app.
A copy of your spreadsheet opens or becomes available in the app.
If you receive an invitation to collaborate on a spreadsheet with others, tap the link in the invitation to open the spreadsheet in a web browser. You can’t edit the spreadsheet on an iOS or Android device; you need a Mac or PC to edit the spreadsheet. To learn about working with others in a shared spreadsheet, see Collaborate with others on a spreadsheet.
