Numbers can open spreadsheets saved in iCloud, on your iPad, on connected servers, and in third-party storage providers such as DropBox.
You can use Numbers to open and edit Microsoft Excel spreadsheets (.xlsx and .xls), and you can save Numbers spreadsheets in other formats, such as Excel, PDF, and CSV.
You open spreadsheets in the spreadsheet manager in Numbers.
Open Numbers, then in the spreadsheet manager (with no spreadsheet open), do one of the following:
Open a local version of a spreadsheet: Tap the spreadsheet thumbnail. If you upgraded to iCloud Drive, any edits you make are synced with your other devices that use iCloud Drive.
If you don’t see your iCloud spreadsheets, you may need to set up iCloud on your device, or turn on iCloud Drive for Numbers in Settings > iCloud.
Tip: You can search the spreadsheet manager by spreadsheet name or view spreadsheets by date or name. To see these controls, swipe down on the spreadsheet manager screen.
Open a spreadsheet sent with AirDrop: Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to open Control Center, then tap AirDrop. Tap a discovery option, and when the AirDrop message appears, tap Add.
Open a spreadsheet stored in iCloud Drive: Tap the small
in the top-left corner of the screen, tap iCloud Drive, tap the Numbers folder (or another folder that contains the spreadsheet), then tap the spreadsheet you want to open.
The thumbnail appears in the spreadsheet manager and a progress bar appears on the thumbnail during the download. If you upgraded to iCloud Drive, any edits you make are synced with your other devices that use iCloud Drive. When the download is finished, tap the thumbnail.
Note: If you haven’t upgraded your iOS device to use iCloud Drive, you can open and edit iCloud spreadsheets, but syncing won’t work in all cases. You must use iCloud Drive for seamless sharing and syncing of spreadsheets. See this Apple Support article for more information.
Open a spreadsheet from a third-party file provider: Tap the small
in the top-left corner of the screen, tap More, then choose from the available sources. The provider name is added to the list. Tap the provider name, then tap the spreadsheet.
Documents opened this way are not added to the thumbnails in the spreadsheet manager. You must open spreadsheets from third-party file providers through the
menu each time.
Open a spreadsheet from a WebDAV server or iTunes: Tap the small
in the top-left corner of the screen, tap WebDAV or iTunes, provide any required information, then tap the spreadsheet. iTunes only appears if you added a spreadsheet to iTunes.
The spreadsheet thumbnail appears in the spreadsheet manager and the spreadsheet opens as a local copy. If you edit the spreadsheet, the changes aren’t synced with other devices unless you move it to iCloud.
You can open Numbers spreadsheets in other apps installed on your device. For example, you can open a spreadsheet as an ePub in iBooks.
In the spreadsheet manager, tap
, then tap Open in Another App.
Tap the spreadsheet.
Tap a format supported by the app you want to use, then provide any required information.
Tap an app to choose it.
The spreadsheet opens in the app on your device.
