Download educational media from iTunes U

iTunes U is a part of the iTunes Store that features free lectures, language lessons, audiobooks, and more, which you can download and enjoy on your iPod, iPhone, iPad, or computer. iTunes U is available to everyone, and offers more than 100,000 educational audio and video files from top universities, museums, public media organizations, and other cultural institutions from around the world.

If you have a free iCloud account, your iTunes U courses, notes, and current play position sync to the iTunes U app on your iOS devices.

Download courses and lessons from iTunes U

  1. Click Media type pop-up button near the top left of the iTunes window, then choose iTunes U.

    If you don’t see iTunes U, choose Edit Menu, select iTunes U, then click Done.

  2. Click iTunes Store.

  3. When you find a course or lesson that interests you, do one of the following:

    • Subscribe to a course: Click Subscribe Free. iTunes downloads the most recent lesson.

    • Download a lesson: Click the Free button next to the lesson.

Some iTunes U courses might use materials that need to be purchased, such as books and videos.

Update or unsubscribe from an iTunes U course

  1. Click Media type pop-up button near the top left of the iTunes window, then choose iTunes U.

    If you don’t see iTunes U, choose Edit Menu, select iTunes U, then click Done.

  2. Do one of the following:

    • Update your course materials: Select a course and click the Refresh button Curved arrow next to the course title. All currently available lessons from the courses you subscribe to are displayed.

    • Unsubscribe from a course: Control-click a course and choose Unsubscribe Collection.

Choose your default iTunes U settings

  1. Click Media type pop-up button near the top left of the iTunes window, then choose iTunes U.

    If you don’t see iTunes U, choose Edit Menu, select iTunes U, then click Done.

  2. Click My iTunes U.

  3. Click Settings, then click Defaults.

  4. Choose the settings you want:

    • Check for new materials: Choose how often to check for new lessons.

    • Materials to Keep: Choose the maximum number of lessons to keep.

    • Automatically Download: Choose whether you want new lessons to be downloaded automatically when they become available. If you don’t want lessons to be downloaded automatically, choose Off.

  5. Click OK.

Choose settings for individual iTunes U courses

Each course you subscribe to can have its own settings.

  1. Click Media type pop-up button near the top left of the iTunes window, then choose iTunes U.

    If you don’t see iTunes U, choose Edit Menu, select iTunes U, then click Done.

  2. Select a course, then click the Settings button Gear icon and choose the settings you want:

    • Keep: Choose the maximum number of lessons to keep.

    • Download: Choose which lessons to download.

    • Sort Order: Choose the order in which lessons are sorted.

    • Play: Choose the order in which lessons are played.

  3. Click Done.

If you don’t choose settings for a course, your default settings apply.
