Import from iTunes or iCloud

If you use iCloud, you can import a video clip or an iMovie project from iCloud Drive. Or you can use iTunes on your computer to import iMovie projects or video clips created on another iOS device.

To use iTunes, you must first send the video clip or iMovie project from the other iOS device to iTunes. See Share to other devices or apps.

iCloud Drive requires iOS 8 or later, a Mac with OS X Yosemite v10.10 or later, or a PC with Windows 7 or later.

Important: If you use iCloud Photos, you can’t sync your photos or video clips using iTunes. See Transfer media to your iOS device.

Import an iMovie project from iCloud Drive

  1. In the Projects browser, tap the More Options button at the bottom of the screen, then tap Import Project.

  2. In the iCloud pane, navigate to the iMovie folder.

  3. Tap the name of the project you want to import.

    When the import is complete, the project opens and can be edited in the same way as any other project.

Import a video clip from iCloud Drive

  1. Create a movie project, or open an existing project for editing.

  2. Tap the Add Media button , then tap iCloud Drive.

  3. In the iCloud pane, navigate to the clip you want to import, and tap to select it.

Import a video clip or an iMovie project from iTunes

  1. Connect your device to your computer, then open iTunes on your computer.

  2. Click the button for your device near the top-left corner of the iTunes window.

  3. Select Apps in the sidebar on the left.

  4. Select iMovie in the Apps list below File Sharing (you may need to scroll to see it).

  5. Do one of the following:

    • Drag the file you want to add to the iMovie Documents pane.

    • Click Add below the iMovie Documents pane, and in the window that appears, navigate to the file you want to add.

  6. To copy the file to your device, select the file, then click Open.

    The file appears in the iMovie Documents pane when copying is complete.

  7. Open iMovie on your device.

  8. In the Projects browser, tap the More Options button at the bottom of the screen, then tap Import Project.

  9. Tap iTunes at the bottom of the pane that appears.

  10. Tap the name of the project you want to import.

    When the import is complete, the project opens and can be edited in the same way as any other project.
