Use Profile Manager to make apps and books available to your users. You retain ownership of the apps, allowing you to revoke and reassign them as needed.
You can use Profile Manager to distribute two types of apps to devices: in-house enterprise apps that are developed using the iOS Developer Enterprise Program, and custom B2B and App Store apps purchased through the Volume Purchase Program (VPP). You can also distribute books purchased through the VPP.
In-house enterprise apps and books
You can distribute apps developed under the iOS Developer Enterprise Program and ePubs and PDFs you create to device groups, users, and user groups. The licensing restrictions from Apple for in-house enterprise apps are contained in the iOS Developer Program Enterprise License Agreement. For more information, see Distribute in-house enterprise apps and books.
Apps purchased through the VPP
The VPP permits an authorized administrator to purchase custom B2B and App Store apps and assign them to users. You create a VPP account, and download the associated service token from the VPP administration website. This token lets you use a single server running Profile Manager to manage apps through the VPP. Once you assign apps to a user or group, users can download apps and books to their devices using App Store, or apps can be pushed directly to the device using Profile Manager.
App distribution
You retain ownership of apps by assigning, revoking, and redistributing them to your users on iOS 7 or later or on OS X v10.9 or later via Profile Manager. If a user no longer needs an app purchased using the VPP, that app can be revoked and reassigned to another user or group. The total number of apps purchased and available for assignment is shown in Apps in the Profile Manager sidebar.
Books purchased through the VPP
The VPP for books works like the VPP for apps, with two notable exceptions: Books can’t be revoked or reassigned, and books can’t be pushed to users using Profile Manager. Otherwise, managing VPP books is just like managing VPP apps.
