There are two basic types of documents: word-processing and page layout.
A word-processing document is intended to include mainly text, like a report or letter. It has a body text area where you type, and the text flows from one page to the next, with new pages created automatically as needed. You can also add shapes, images, and other objects to a word-processing document.
A page layout document is like a blank canvas to which you add text, images, and other elements, then lay them out on the page however you want. It doesn’t have a text body area where you can freely type. Rather, to add text, you add a text box then type in it. New pages must be added manually.
Some Pages templates are designed specifically for word-processing (such as the Basic and Newsletter templates), and others for page layout (such as the Tab Flyer and Museum Brochure templates).
The Blank templates are word-processing templates; to convert one to page layout, open it and choose File > Convert to Page Layout (from the File menu at the top of your screen).
Tip: To see which type of document you have, click
in the toolbar, then click Document. If the Document Body checkbox is selected, it’s a word-processing document. If not, it’s a page layout document.
