Link to websites and email messages

Numbers detects valid web addresses (URLs) and email addresses. URLs and email addresses become active and are underlined to indicate that they’re links. You can edit these links or deactivate them so that they appear and behave as normal text.

When a reader clicks or taps a link to a webpage, the webpage opens if they’re connected to the internet. Clicking or tapping an email link opens a preaddressed email message.

If you don’t want Numbers to automatically detect links, you can turn off automatic link formatting.

Make a word or phrase a link

You can make a word or phrase a link without showing its associated URL or email address in your spreadsheet.

  1. Select the text you want to turn into a link.

  2. Choose Format > Add Link (from the Format menu at the top of your screen) and choose Email or Webpage.

You can also press Command-K on your keyboard, then click Edit.

  3. Do one of the following:

    • For a website: Enter a URL in the Link field.

    • For an email address: Enter an email address and subject in the To and Subject fields.

  4. To verify the link, click “Go to Page” or “Go to Email.”

Edit a link

You can edit link text to be something other than the URL or email address. If the link is to a preaddressed email message, you can also add a subject.

  1. Do one of the following:

    • In a table cell, double-click inside the cell, then click the link.

    • In a text box or shape, click the link.

  2. Click Edit, then make your changes.

    • For a website: In the Display field, enter the text you want readers to see. For example, you may want to show the domain name and not the entire web address.

    • For an email address: Enter a subject in the Subject field. In the Display field, enter the text you want readers to see. For example, you may want to show the recipient name and not the entire email address.

  3. To verify the link, click “Go to Page” or “Go to email.”

Deactivate a link

  1. Do one of the following:

    • In a table cell, double-click inside the cell, then click the link.

    • In a text box or shape, click the link.

  2. Click Edit, then click Remove.

The link text is retained, but the underline is removed and the link is no longer active.

Turn off automatic formatting for links

If you don’t want Numbers to format website URLs and email addresses as active links, you can turn off automatic formatting.

  1. Choose Numbers > Preferences (from the Numbers menu at the top of your screen).

  2. Click Auto-Correction at the top of the preferences window.

  3. In the Formatting section, deselect the “Automatically detect links” checkbox.

The setting applies to all Numbers spreadsheets. Existing links aren’t affected by the change.
