Onscreen text corresponding to the audio of a video program. Originally developed for hearing-impaired viewers, closed captioning (also known as line 21 text) is also frequently used on televisions in loud environments (such as restaurants and bars) or in locations where playing the audio might be considered rude or inappropriate (such as hospital waiting rooms).
