How IP address or host name changes affect file sharing services

Changing the IP address or network identity may require additional configuration for SMB file service, but not for AFP file service. File services provide file storage and retrieval for network clients.

AFP file service monitor network interfaces for changes and adapt as necessary without administrator intervention. No further configuration is required.

SMB file service may be affected by changing the server’s host name unless the computer name is also changed to match the unqualified new host name.

If you have other software that interfaces with file servers (for example, automated scripts), and it refers to old host names and IP addresses, update that software as well.

Clients might also have URLs, bookmarks, favorites, or documentation that refers to previous host names or IP addresses. Make sure that client information is updated to reflect the new name or address.
