NetInstall service lets you configure client computers without locally installed operating systems or even without installed disk drives. Client computers must have an Ethernet connection to the network that the NetInstall server is on and use DHCP to obtain an IP address. Systemless or diskless clients can start from a NetInstall server using the N key method. See Start up using the N key.
After the client computer starts, you can use Startup Disk preferences to select the NetBoot disk image as the startup disk for the client. That way, you no longer need to use the N key method to start the client from the server.
Removing the operating system software from client computers gives you more control over the user environment. By forcing the client to start up from the server and using client management to deny access to the client computer’s local hard disk, you can prevent users from saving files to the local hard disk.
