EVB3 MIDI Controller Assignments

MIDI controller assignments allow you to control the EVB3 with an external MIDI controller or a host application such as MainStage.

Learning EVB3 MIDI Controller Assignments

The Morph wheel and Wah Wah effect allow you to assign a MIDI controller by using the learn feature.

To learn a controller
  1. Choose -Learn- from the CC pop-up menu of the respective parameter.

When this setting is active, the parameter is assigned to the first appropriate incoming MIDI data message.

  2. Move the desired controller.

The Learn mode features a 20-second time-out facility:  If the EVB3 does not receive a MIDI message within 20 seconds, the parameter reverts to its original MIDI controller assignment.

Note: A checkmark is displayed in front of the currently active/assigned controller.

Choosing the EVB3 MIDI Mode

The MIDI Mode parameter determines the way the EVB3 drawbars respond to remote MIDI control change messages. Most users won’t need to change anything here.

Figure. MIDI Mode parameter.

If you own a MIDI drawbar organ, you’ll want to use its hardware drawbars to control the EVB3. Most hardware drawbar organs use an independent MIDI control change number for each drawbar. Lists of control change number assignments for the MIDI modes in the table below are shown in ensuing sections.

To choose a MIDI mode
  • Repeatedly click the MIDI Mode parameter field at the bottom center of the interface until you see the desired mode.

Mode
Description
RK
Every drawbar responds to a specific MIDI control change number, beginning with CC #70. Nondrawbar parameters can be set using control change messages up to CC #118.
HS
All of the EVB3 drawbars are controlled by MIDI control change numbers #80–82. Values are intelligently mapped to the drawbars. The resolution of this technique is not particularly high (much like the original B3), but it works well. The Hammond-Suzuki XB-2 uses this controller assignment method, allowing you to remotely control the EVB3’s drawbars. In addition to drawbar support, you can use the following controls of the Hammond Suzuki XB-1, XK-2, and XK-3 to remotely control the EVB3:
  • Leslie:  Brake/On/Fast

  • Vibrato and Chorus

  • Percussion (2nd/3rd/soft/fast)

A list of all control change number assignments can be found at EVB3 MIDI Mode:  HS.
NI
The Native Instruments B4 settings are replicated, allowing the use of the Native Instruments B4D Drawbar controller.
NE
The EVB3 responds to control change messages from Clavia’s Nord Electro II keyboard.
Off
The EVB3 does not respond to MIDI drawbar messages.
